Lemmings Paintball 2-Player Mode

One of the best features of Lemmings Paintball is the ability to play against another human player via a local area network connection or via the internet. Lemmings Paintball doesn’t connect to a server like these new fangled multiplayer online games, but rather you have to specify your opponent’s IP address in order to connect directly to them.

Until now, internet games have been very difficult to set up as Lemmings Paintball has never been great when it comes to establishing and maintaining a connection. However, I was informed by a helpful person named Scott that there is a new piece of free software that makes the whole thing extremely easy. Click ‘Play Online’ below to view the step by step guide, or if you have already got Lemmings Paintball working over the internet then click ‘Level Guide’. If you want to play against someone on a local area network (i.e. two computers linked by a cable) then click ‘Play on a Network’.

Playing Lemmings Paintball Online

If you already have Hamachi set up and you don’t have anyone in mind to play against then consider using the following network details:

Network Name: Lemball

Password: psygnosis96

These details are case sensitive. If Hamachi hangs when you enter these details then it probably means that the network hasn’t been set up yet. Click cancel and create a network with these details, and await for an opponent to turn up.

Step 1: Download Hamachi

Hamachi is a free tool that creates a reliable connection between you and your opponent online as if both of you were linked by a LAN cable.

Download Hamachi

Click the link and browse the site if you want to learn how it all works. On the sidebar to the left, click ‘Download’. I created this guide using version 1.0.0.56 (beta) but click the newest one available. Beta means that the version is still in the testing stage but that it should be stable enough.

Step 2: Installing Hamachi

Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation process, which is very easy and straight-forward. At one stage you will -e asked whether you would like to ‘Disable vulnerable Windows services over Hamachi’. I suggest that you disable them for added security as the services aren’t required to play Lemmings Paintball.

Step 3: Using Hamachi

Launch Hamachi from your programs menu or desktop. It will look something like this:

A view of the Hamachi interface

A window should appear to the left that will show you how to operate the program. I recommend that you use this tutorial as it’s a lot easier to follow than my brief guide. I’ll provide you with the basics. To start, click the power button in the bottom left corner. Wait a few moments while it does its thing.

To the right are two buttons. Click the button to the left. The process from here is quite straight forward- either you create a new network or join an existing one. If you are playing against a friend then one of you creates, the other joins. You’ll need the means to arrange a game before hand, such as with an instant messenger or by phone.

However, if you don’t have anyone in mind to play with then click ‘Join Existing Network’. For the name enter Lemball and for the password enter psygnosis96. These are case sensitive.

If it hangs for a while then it probably means that no one has created the network yet. Click ‘Cancel’ and repeat the process, but this time select ‘Create new Network’. Use the same network name and password given. This way, viewers of this website will all know where they can find one another.

In the picture above, Charlie has joined the Lemball network and sees that Lee is online. By right-clicking Lee, he can select ‘Chat’ and have a conversation with him.

Note down your opponent’s IP address, which is displayed to the left of their name. If it isn’t then right-click their name, select ‘Set Label’ and click ‘Default’.

Step 4: Starting a game in Lemmings Paintball

Start Lemmings Paintball as normal, and click the following button:

The Lemmings Paintball Network Button

You will now enter the Lemmings Paintball ‘lobby’:

The Lemmings Paintball Network Lobby

Click ‘Start Spec’ and enter your name. Note: ‘Start LAN’ only appears to work if only one player presses it. Press enter and wait patiently while Lemmings Paintball initialises its settings. If you have a firewall it may notify you that Lemmings Paintball is trying to access the internet or network so give it your permission. If you are in full screen mode then press Control and Escape together to minimize the game and see if your firewall is asking for permission. Within a few moments you will be prompted to enter your opponent’s IP address. If you are playing on a local area network then each player’s IP address will be shown on their own screen.

When you press enter, Lemmings Paintball will begin searching for the specified IP address. Wait a while for your opponent to type in your address. When each of you have typed in each other’s IP addresses you should appear on each other’s lobby list in green. If it begins flashing red and green then it means that your opponent has confirmed that they want to play against you. When both of you have clicked on each other’s names you will be taken to the level selection screen. Give yourself a pat on the back and take your pick from one of 12 great levels.

2-Player Level Guides

There’s only one so far. They take ages to create and I don’t even know if anyone looks at them! If you’d like me to include more guides then contact me and I’ll create one right away.
