Lemming Hood and his Merry Lems

This has to be one of my favourite 2-player levels and so I shall cover it in detail. The main feature of this map is the big island fort- a fort that you will need to capture at all costs! One way to get onto the ‘fort’ (which is surrounded by a moat) is via the moving platform at the south side of it. Once on the island, there is a lever at the front of it (to our right of the lemming below) which makes a wall rise from the ground and completely blocks that method of entry. The other switch moves the floating platform, so if an opponent floats across to the island you can send right back again. Below as you can see, one of my opponent’s lemmings has just floated across the moat but can’t get onto the island or shoot at my lemming because of the big wall. Make sure that you don’t muddle the switches up and accidently lower the blocking mechanism!

What’s special about this ‘fort’ anyway?

It’s a fort. Everyone loves forts. This fort is also a special fort as it holds both the flags you have to capture and the flags your enemy needs to capture. It’s always embarrassing when your opponent captures the fort before you. What’s even more embarrassing is when they capture the fort from you.

Capture the fort from me? But the fort has a lock! You told me it was impregnable!

Well yeah it’s a good fort, but if your opponent can’t go through walls, they can still go over them. To the rear of the fort you may spy some objects hidden behind the trees. These are crates…

…and they contain Ikea-packed catapults…

But which do I pick?

Well if you pick one of the two outer ones and you don’t have any keys then you may end up like the blue and pink lemmings below…

Lemmings locked in separate enclosures by barriers

…schoolboy error. The red lemming was wise and chose the middle catapult. The blue and pink lemmings can still do something useful though by flicking the switches in their cells and grabbing the bags o’ points. These will lower the platforms that have the flags on them. One of the switches is for your flag and the other lowers your opponent’s flag. I forget which switch does which. Sorry. I’ve also forgotten where the catapults on the island take you (look below the blue lemming in the picture above). They either ping you off the island or they ping you onto the high walls of it, which will provide you access to the flags.

I’m on the island! What do I do now?

All you have to do now is stay on the island. Usually when I’ve played this map my opponent has stayed at the front of the island as that’s where they expect the attack. If this is the case then your lemming can stay at the back of the island unnoticed for quite a while without detection. What I suggest is that you catapult another lemming or two as backup soldiers, and send them into battle one at a time to rid the fort of the enemy scum at the front of the island…

A lemming shooting at enemy lemmings

Here’s a little tip- when lemmings are left idle they will get bored and perform a little entertainment act. In the picture above my opponent’s lemmings are in middle of such an act, meaning that my opponent isn’t necessarily paying attention to this part of the screen, or has gone to get a Coke or something. The lemmings who are busy taunting my poor red lemming trapped on the draw bridge, are unaware that they are about to be splatted from behind by my yellow lemming. Of course, it’s a bit cold blooded, and if I fought fairly then I’d wait for my opponent to come back to their PC. I’d know when they’re back as they’d shoot the heck out of my yellow lemming.

Apart from the fort, what else is there on this map?

Well like most of the 2-player levels you’ll find yourself a nice duplicator. Weilding its power, even if you were to lose every lemming in battle except one, you will be able to duplicate it so that you have a full squad that’s fighting fit within seconds.

A lemming duplicating machine

It’s always a good idea to always have at least one lemming hiding behind one of the trees around the duplicator for two reasons:

  1. Whenever you lose a lemming you can instantly switch to the lemming by the duplicator and replace the lost lemming.
  2. When your opponent loses a lemming or three, this will be the first place that they’ll head for. With your hidden lemming you can sniper the enemy lemming before it manages to restore its squad.

A lemming hiding behind a tree

My lemming is hiding behind one of the trees. If I can’t see him, my opponent can’t either. In fact this sometimes creates the situation where both players hide behind the same tree without realising :)

If you’ve sustained heavy losses then I suggest that you lay low for a while and not visit this magical machine as that’s where your opponent will expect you to go. There are plenty of trees around the map that you can hide your lemming behind unnoticed. While your opponent searches for you they’ll divert their attention away from the duplicator. They’ll still be able to hear the sound of the machine working though and will instantly switch to the sniper lemming guarding the machine. Therefore it’s always a good idea to shoot at every tree around the duplicator before using it in case a lemming hides in wait.

Well I hope you enjoyed my guide to Lemming Hood and his Merry Lems! I’m sorry that I haven’t made any other multiplayer level guides but it’s very time consuming you know! I don’t even know if anyone reads them! If you’d like me to include more level guides then drop me a line and I’ll create one right away!

Oh by the way- watch out for the paint mines. They’re scattered around this level.
